Performance Management  


Performance Management course teaches students the basics of creating a performance plan and the appraisal process. Students will learn how to conduct a performance-planning meeting, document the performance plan, provide positive and constructive feedback, coach employees during the appraisal period, appraise employee's performance, conduct an appraisal discussion, and document an appraisal.


Course activities also cover communicating to performance problems to employees, making performance improvements, conducting a status meeting, and documenting ongoing communication. Students will also learn how to respond to a defensive employee, resolve conflict in an appraisal discussion, and understand the laws governing the appraisal process to reduce the risk of legal challenge. The manual is designed for quick scanning in the classroom and filled with interactive exercises that help ensure students success.


It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this standard are able to:

  • Understand the work environment
  • Gather and use information relevant to managing individual and team performance
  • Apply basic negotiation, interviewing and interpersonal skills

Course Accreditations

This course is accredited Services SETA and each learner will have to submit a Portfolio of Evidence after the training, upon being deemed competent, the learner will receive a Certificate of Competence.

Who Should Attend

This generic and/or vocational learning programme is intended for all persons who need to manage individual and team performance.  This unit standard is intended for people who are or who aspire to become supervisors or line managers at any level. Persons credited with this unit standard are able to set performance goals and measures; to formulate development plans; and to monitor and evaluate performance

This learning programme allows entry to certain positions / is required job specific training / links with other vocations / enhances current job skills, specific to the individual learner.

Important Notes

  • Students are to be at the training venue by 08h00 in preparation for a 08h30 start time.
  • Learnfast retains the right to change this calendar without any notification.
  • Bookings are only confirmed upon receipt of the proof of payment or an official company purchase order for the full amount of the training.
  • For full day courses Learnfast will supply you with the relevant training material. A desktop computer to use for the training (where applicable), tea/coffee and a full lunch for full day InClass training hosted at Learnfast only. Catering is not included for OnSite training and laptop is available for hire at an additional cost if required.
  • Cancellation or rescheduling requests must be in writing and reach us via fax or email at least 5 (five) working days prior to the course commencement date. Full course fees may be retained for no shows or requests within 5 working days prior to commencement.
  • Although we go to great lengths to ensure that all training proceeds as scheduled, Learnfast reserves the right to cancel or postpone dates if we require to do so and undertake to inform clients in writing and telephonically of these changes.
  • Learnfast suggests clients wait until a week prior to course commencement that a course has been confirmed to go ahead as scheduled before booking flight and accommodation. Learnfast is NOT responsible for cost associated with cancellation of classes such as flight and accommodation for clients.

Module 1: Set performance goals and measures

  • Ensure that performance goals are measurable, clear, achievable and aligned to individual career paths, organisational objectives and legislative requirements
  • Quantify performance measures to facilitate performance evaluation
  • Undertake appropriate actions to obtain agreement from relevant parties to identified performance goals and measures
  • Ensure that the stipulation of the identified performance goals and measures in the performance contract enables the contract to serve as a source document for performance evaluation


Module 2: Formulate development plans

  • Focus plans on competencies needed to achieve performance goals of the individual, department and organisation
  • Formulate plans in a clear manner and define it in terms of specific improvement actions, time frames and accountability
  • Align plans with legislative requirements and individual career paths
  • Take appropriate facilitation actions to obtain agreement on development plans from relevant parties


Module 3: Monitor and evaluate performance

  • Apply performance evaluation techniques that are valid, current and sufficient
  • Align performance goals and measures with organisational and industry practices and values
  • Monitor performance and assess it on an ongoing basis against performance goals
  • Record progress and update records to manage performance
  • Analyse performance records to identify variations in performance and to compile a suggested plan of action
  • Give feedback to address competence gaps and poor performance, recognise good performance and revise performance goals
  • Ensure that feedback is constructive, tactful, honest, respectful and is focussed on performance
