Caring for Babies, Toddlers and Children  

Overview

This course focuses on how to provide nutrition, safety and health to babies, toddler and children.  Learners will be able demonstrate practical care for either babies/toddlers or young children, and explain how they would have approached it differently had they been working with the other age-group.

 

ACCREDITED TO UNIT STANDARD IDs: 244469, NQF LEVEL 5, 10 CREDITS

Prerequisites

It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

Course Accreditations

This course is accredited with ETDP Seta and each learner will have to submit a Portfolio of Evidence after the training, upon being deemed competent, the learner will receive a Certicate of Competence.

Course Outcomes

Once completed learners should be able to:

  • Providing a safe and healthy environment to prevent and reduce injuries and illness.
  • Promoting and maintaining optimal health and nutrition for caregivers and children.
  • Promoting the rights of children.
  • Managing routines and transitions.

Important Notes

  • Students are to be at the training venue by 08h00 in preparation for a 08h30 start time.
  • Learnfast retains the right to change this calendar without any notification.
  • Bookings are only confirmed upon receipt of the proof of payment or an official company purchase order for the full amount of the training.
  • For full day courses Learnfast will supply you with the relevant training material. A desktop computer to use for the training (where applicable), tea/coffee and a full lunch for full day InClass training hosted at Learnfast only. Catering is not included for OnSite training and laptop is available for hire at an additional cost if required.
  • Cancellation or rescheduling requests must be in writing and reach us via fax or email at least 5 (five) working days prior to the course commencement date. Full course fees may be retained for no shows or requests within 5 working days prior to commencement.
  • Although we go to great lengths to ensure that all training proceeds as scheduled, Learnfast reserves the right to cancel or postpone dates if we require to do so and undertake to inform clients in writing and telephonically of these changes.
  • Learnfast suggests clients wait until a week prior to course commencement that a course has been confirmed to go ahead as scheduled before booking flight and accommodation. Learnfast is NOT responsible for cost associated with cancellation of classes such as flight and accommodation for clients.

  • Identifying environment hazards and implications on safety of children.
  • Strategies for preventing and/or correcting safety hazards in the environment are identified and implemented.
  • Maintaining Health and Safety records
  • Keeping accessible and accurate contact lists of emergency services and parent.
  • Emergency plans, procedures and equipment are ensured to be available.
  • Supervision of children is appropriate to their developmental level and the degree of potential risk involved.

 

Promote and maintain optimal health and nutrition for caregivers and children.

  • Child health is monitored and instruments are correctly interpreted and integrated into practice.
  • Awareness and implementation of Workplace Health Policies and Guidelines is explained in terms of maintaining staff health.
  • Understanding common childhood diseases and appropriate course of action.
  • Actions and communication responding to the holistic needs of children are dealt with in a non-discriminatory and confidential manner.
  • Responses to injuries and emergencies are appropriate to the given situation and in line with emergency procedures and first aid practice.
  • Records reflect up-to-date and accurate accounts of health history, regular checks and monitoring activities, medications, actions taken, accidents and incidents.
  • Administration of medication.
  • Identifying precautions.
  • Providing for nutritional feeds and providing nutritional advice.

 

Promote and protect the rights of children.

  • Providing education on child rights
  • Identifying violations of child rights.
  • Monitoring of children.
  • Educating parents on protection of children.

 

Manage routines and transitions.

  • Creating routine that is flexible and sensitive.
